We are also interested in better understanding the role of metabolism-disrupting chemicals in the occurrence of metabolic disorders. Our studies are mainly focused on the pancreatic beta and alpha-cells, but also in other tissues involved in glucose homeostasis. The goal is to comprehend the molecular differences between alpha and beta cells that allow the former to survive during diabetes development. Understanding these differences may allow the design of strategies to protect beta cells and slow down the development of the disease. In addition, this research team is interested in identifying and testing chemicals that, by interacting with proteins involved in different signaling pathways (e.g., type I interferon pathway), can promote the survival of human pancreatic beta cells. Tambi\u00e9n estamos interesados \u200b\u200ben comprender mejor el papel de las sustancias qu\u00edmicas que alteran el metabolismo en la aparici\u00f3n de trastornos metab\u00f3licos. Nuestros estudios se centran principalmente en las c\u00e9lulas beta y alfa del p\u00e1ncreas, pero tambi\u00e9n en otros tejidos implicados en la homeostasis de la glucosa. El objetivo final es determinar nuevas dianas moleculares y contribuir al desarrollo de estrategias terap\u00e9uticas y de prevenci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p><p><strong>ISLET BIOLOGY LAB<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El principal inter\u00e9s de este grupo es comprender la funci\u00f3n de los islotes pancre\u00e1ticos y la supervivencia en salud y diabetes. El objetivo es comprender las diferencias moleculares entre las c\u00e9lulas alfa y beta que permiten a las primeras sobrevivir durante el desarrollo de la diabetes. Comprender estas diferencias puede permitir el dise\u00f1o de estrategias para proteger las c\u00e9lulas beta y ralentizar el desarrollo de la enfermedad. Adem\u00e1s, este equipo de investigaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 interesado en identificar y probar sustancias qu\u00edmicas que, al interactuar con prote\u00ednas involucradas en diferentes v\u00edas de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n (por ejemplo, la v\u00eda del interfer\u00f3n tipo I), puedan promover la supervivencia de las c\u00e9lulas beta pancre\u00e1ticas humanas.
