{"id":24850,"date":"2025-11-11T07:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T07:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/?p=24850"},"modified":"2025-11-11T07:00:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T07:00:40","slug":"new-study-reveals-a-molecular-pathway-involved-in-gestational-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/en\/2025\/11\/11\/new-study-reveals-a-molecular-pathway-involved-in-gestational-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"New Study Reveals a Molecular Pathway Involved in Gestational Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"232\" data-end=\"520\">We are pleased to share the latest scientific breakthrough from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dialab.umh.es\/\"><strong data-start=\"300\" data-end=\"336\">Diabesity and Islet Research Lab<\/strong><\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.umh.es\/\">Basic Research Unit in Diabetes (IDiBE-UMH)<\/a>, in collaboration with the <strong data-start=\"415\" data-end=\"484\">Gynecology and Obstetrics Department at Hospital Vinalop\u00f3 (Elche)<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"519\">University of Alicante<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"646\">The study, led by <strong data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"571\">Dr. Paloma Alonso-Magdalena<\/strong>, has been published in the journal <em data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"629\">Molecular Metabolism<\/em> under the title:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"648\" data-end=\"803\">\u27a1\ufe0f <strong data-start=\"651\" data-end=\"803\">\u201cIncreased TGF-\u03b2\/Activin-Smad2 signaling is associated with pancreatic \u03b2-cell dysfunction and glucose intolerance in gestational diabetes mellitus.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"852\">\ud83d\udccc <strong data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"852\">What was investigated and why it matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"1065\"><strong data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"878\">Gestational diabetes<\/strong> is the most common metabolic disorder during pregnancy. It occurs when the mother\u2019s body does not produce enough <strong data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1003\">insulin<\/strong>, the hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose levels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1067\" data-end=\"1249\">During pregnancy, pancreatic beta cells normally <strong data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1147\">increase insulin production<\/strong> to meet growing metabolic demands. However, in some women, this adaptation does not happen correctly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1287\">This study addressed a key question:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1385\">\n<p data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1385\"><em data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1385\">\u201cWhat is failing inside pancreatic cells that prevents them from adapting during pregnancy?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1483\">\ud83e\uddec <strong data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1445\">The answer may involve a specific molecular pathway<\/strong>: the <strong data-start=\"1451\" data-end=\"1482\">TGF-\u03b2\/Activin-Smad2 pathway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1485\" data-end=\"1505\">\ud83d\udccd <strong data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1505\">Main Findings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1535\">Researchers discovered that:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1760\">\n<li data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1615\">\n<p data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1615\">This pathway is <strong data-start=\"1555\" data-end=\"1579\">abnormally activated<\/strong> in women with gestational diabetes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1760\">\n<p data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1659\">When this happens, pancreatic beta cells:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"1760\">\n<li data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"1693\">\n<p data-start=\"1664\" data-end=\"1693\">produce <strong data-start=\"1672\" data-end=\"1688\">less insulin<\/strong>, and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1760\">\n<p data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1760\">have a <strong data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1742\">reduced ability to grow and adapt<\/strong> during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"1937\">The study also identifies <strong data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1824\">potential circulating biomarkers<\/strong>, which could enable <strong data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1874\">earlier detection of risk<\/strong> for gestational diabetes in the future\u2014before symptoms appear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"1961\">\u2728 <strong data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"1961\">Why this matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"1978\">This discovery:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1980\" data-end=\"2243\">\n<li data-start=\"1980\" data-end=\"2050\">\n<p data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"2050\">Helps deepen our understanding of how gestational diabetes develops.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2143\">\n<p data-start=\"2053\" data-end=\"2143\">Opens the door to exploring therapeutic strategies to <strong data-start=\"2107\" data-end=\"2142\">modulate this molecular pathway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2243\">\n<p data-start=\"2146\" data-end=\"2243\">Could contribute to improving metabolic health during pregnancy, benefiting both mother and baby.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2312\">\ud83d\udd17 More information:<br data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2268\" \/><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.molmet.2025.102274\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2268\" data-end=\"2312\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.molmet.2025.102274<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to share the latest scientific breakthrough from the Diabesity and Islet Research Lab of the Basic Research Unit in Diabetes (IDiBE-UMH), in collaboration with the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department at Hospital Vinalop\u00f3 (Elche) and the University of Alicante.
