Sargis<\/strong>, recently published in the journal <em data-start=\"2440\" data-end=\"2469\">Environmental Endocrinology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2750\">The article, entitled <em data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2639\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/enendo\/article\/2\/1\/wkag001\/8457957?login=false\">Microplastics, nanoplastics, and plastic chemicals: applying the key characteristics of metabolism disrupting agents shows reason for concern<\/a>\u201d<\/em>, examines the impact of micro- and nanoplastics, as well as plastic-associated chemicals, on metabolic health.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2752\" data-end=\"3128\">In this review, the authors apply the novel <strong data-start=\"2796\" data-end=\"2834\">\u201cKey Characteristics of Toxicants\u201d<\/strong> framework to investigate how <strong data-start=\"2864\" data-end=\"2898\">micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs)<\/strong> and commonly encountered chemicals such as <strong data-start=\"2942\" data-end=\"2963\">bisphenol S (BPS)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2965\" data-end=\"2996\">diisononyl phthalate (DINP)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3001\" data-end=\"3034\">perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)<\/strong> can act as <strong data-start=\"3046\" data-end=\"3078\">metabolism-disrupting agents<\/strong> through multiple cellular and molecular pathways.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3130\" data-end=\"3197\">The integrated findings of the study show that these compounds can:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3306\">\n<li data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3226\">\n<p data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3226\">Disrupt insulin function<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3227\" data-end=\"3250\">\n<p data-start=\"3229\" data-end=\"3250\">Promote fat storage<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3251\" data-end=\"3271\">\n<p data-start=\"3253\" data-end=\"3271\">Alter gut health<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3272\" data-end=\"3306\">\n<p data-start=\"3274\" data-end=\"3306\">Trigger inflammatory processes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3480\">Importantly, these effects are observed at <strong data-start=\"3351\" data-end=\"3395\">environmentally relevant exposure levels<\/strong>, highlighting the need for a careful assessment of their impact on metabolic health.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3482\" data-end=\"3725\">This work underscores the importance of <strong data-start=\"3522\" data-end=\"3561\">integrative, mechanistic approaches<\/strong> to better understand the effects of environmental contaminants and their links to metabolic diseases, in line with the translational research carried out at IDiBE.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3727\" data-end=\"3806\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">We congratulate all those involved on this excellent collaborative achievement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3727\" data-end=\"3806\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25690\" src=\"https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/files\/2026\/02\/AN5_-240x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/files\/2026\/02\/AN5_-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/files\/2026\/02\/AN5_.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25684\" src=\"https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/files\/2026\/02\/Esther-Fuentes-240x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/files\/2026\/02\/Esther-Fuentes-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/idibe.umh.es\/files\/2026\/02\/Esther-Fuentes.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IDiBE is pleased to announce the publication of a new scientific article authored by \u00c1ngel Nadal and Esther Fuentes from our Diabetes Research Unit, in collaboration with Jane Muncke and Robert M.
