On Monday, June 2, 2025, our institute hosted the Basic Laboratory Biosafety Course, a key training initiative aimed at technical and research staff working in the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine at the University.
This course provided essential training in key aspects of laboratory biosafety, covering current regulations and best practices in biological containment laboratories.
We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Gonzalo Pascual Álvarez, Technical and Biosafety Director at the Carlos III Health Institute, who presented the fundamental concepts and current regulations on biosafety, as well as the necessary requirements, protective equipment, and infrastructure for carrying out work in biological safety facilities.
In addition, Dr. María Lourdes Renart Pérez, head of the Biological Containment Level 2 (BSL-2) Laboratory at IDiBE, presented the features and operation of our BSL-2 facility, an advanced infrastructure for infectious disease research using moderate-risk pathogenic agents.
Organized by IDiBE and the Support Service for Teaching and Research (SATDI), with support from the Vice Rectorate for Research and Transfer, this course represented an excellent opportunity to strengthen our staff’s biosafety competencies and to promote a culture of safe laboratory practices.
