🌾 At IDiBE, we celebrate how the science we develop in collaboration with other organizations is making steady progress toward society, generating real-world impact.
Our Research Group on the Design and Development of Bioactive Molecules is participating in a project that has led to the discovery of anti-ageing properties in extracts obtained from rice straw, an abundant agricultural residue in the Valencian Community.
This study — recently featured in La Vanguardia — shows how agricultural by-products can be transformed into high-value ingredients for the cosmetics industry, promoting a more circular, sustainable, and competitive economy.
According to our researcher Enrique Barrajón-Catalán, “the goal is to ensure that rice straw stops being a problem and becomes profitable for rice farmers.”
Meanwhile, Pepe Castro, regional director of projects at La Unió Llauradora i Ramadera, explained that the main challenge was removing the straw from the soil, a material that is difficult to handle, especially in wet or flooded fields.
Thanks to the joint work of all the organizations involved — IDiBE, La Unió, Inescop (the Footwear Technology Institute), and the company Analco Auxiliar Calzado S.A.U. — there is now a viable and innovative business plan to turn this residue into a valuable resource for both the footwear and cosmetics sectors.
