The Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) will appoint Antonio Ferrer Montiel, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), as its new president tomorrow, Friday 6 September. The appointment of Professor Ferrer Montiel will take place during the closing ceremony of the 46th SEBBM Congress, which is being held in A Coruña.

For the next four years, UMH professor Antonio Ferrer will be the president of this organisation which, since its foundation in 1963, has been a benchmark in the promotion of research and training in biochemistry and molecular biology in Spain. The professor and director of the Institute for Research, Development and Innovation in Health Biotechnology of Elche (IDiBE) of the UMH Ferrer has more than 160 publications in high-impact international journals, has directed more than twenty doctoral theses and founded four spin-offs. His work has focused on the study of pain and peripheral neuropathies that develop, for example, as a side effect of various cancer chemotherapies.

SEBBM has more than 3,500 members and is the largest scientific society in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology in Spain. Its mission is to contribute to the development and dissemination of these sciences, supporting continuing education, cutting-edge research and dialogue between science and society. Ferrer Montiel is the second person from Alicante to hold the Presidency of this entity, as previously only the researcher Alberto Sols was president of the SEBBM, as well as being its founder.

Antonio Ferrer will seek to further strengthen the role of the Society in the scientific community by promoting initiatives that foster interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge transfer between academia and industry. Antonio Ferrer has expressed his commitment to supporting young researchers, fostering innovation and scientific excellence, fundamental pillars for progress in these disciplines.
