Peripheral Neuropathies
The main objective is to understand the mechanisms underlying sensitization of sensory neurons caused by some diseases or drugs. We focus mainly on three pathologies: (i) chronic migraine as a paradigm of chronic inflammatory pain that, in addition, shows a strong sexual dimorphism; (ii) chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy as a model of neuropathic pain syndrome; and, (iii) psoriatic pruritus as a model of chronic pruritus. We aim to validate therapeutic targets to identify and develop drug candidates that restore neuronal sensitivity. Our proposal is to develop a human skin model innervated by bioprinting and transdifferentiation techniques and validate it as a preclinical model to reduce the use of animals in experimentation.
